- Portland Fire & Rescue Station 1
Portland, Oregon
Awarded in 2005
The team of THA Architecture/Michael Willis Architects placed first in a national design competition for the Portland Fire & Rescue Station 1 and Administrative Offices. Located in a prominent waterfront location in the heart of Portland's Old Town/Chinatown District, Station 1 was intended serve the City in a protective capacity and provide outreach and educational programs to the community.
The building was conceived as a pair of connected pavilions that respond to the complex relationships between public access and technical prowess required of the program. The design offered a changing visual experience through its layered systems, suggesting the complex and dynamic relationship between the building occupants, the station and the city.
