University of California, Davis
60,000 sf
Estimated completion Spring 2011

THA Architecture completed both the programming and design phase for a 30,000 sf addition to the UC Davis' Law Library and School. The addition, currently under construction, creates a new front door for the School and will include mock courtrooms, seminar classrooms, offices and a new courtyard. A 30,000 sf renovation to the existing building is currently in the design phase and will improve student work and social spaces, consolidate circulation, update mechanical and IT infrastructure, and relocate and expand the law library's stack area and special collections.

Relating in scale and materials to the existing King Hall, the design improves departmental communication and interaction by relocating administration offices from the basement, consolidating and expanding student services, increasing accessibility and creating a new courtyard. The light and open facility will reflect the spirit of the Law School and foster interaction within the campus and the Davis community.

Sustainable Design Highlights:

Reuse of existing building, FSC certified wood, operable windows, low VOC materials for optimal indoor air quality , minimize construction waste, use of rapidly renewable materials, exterior sunshades to reduce interior glare and heat gain.

Certification: LEED Silver (Target: 2012)
