- Yellowstone Art Museum
Billings, Montana
45,000 sf
Completed in 1998
Designed as an urban complex, the 44,000 sf Yellowstone Art Museum integrates the city's historic old county jail building which previously contained all functions of the museum, including the galleries. In this addition and renovation, the various components of the complex are joined around a central courtyard that brings light and the space of the city into the heart of the museum. Revolving around this center space, the two new buildings complement the forms of the existing volumes in plan, massing and detail. In this way, the ensemble takes on a quality of wholeness and singularity, while clearly revealing that it evolved over time.
