Portland Community College, Rock Creek Campus, Portland, OR

Completed in 2004

THA is the architect for the expansion and renovation of the Rock Creek Campus. A key development was the placement of a signature library building and entry plaza at the south end of the campus' central green space. The building provides a dramatic and active presence along the entry drive, heightening the visitor's sense of arrival and creating an energized "front door" for the College.

The first floor of the building houses the campus bookstore, classrooms, the registrar, counseling offices, financial aid, testing rooms, additional student services and administrative office space. The second level houses the campus library. Serving as a resource for both the college population and the community as a whole, the new library provides for increased general and reserve collections, more computer access, expanded staff support areas and a large reading room with spectacular views of the landscape. Large windows provide abundant natural light and serve to visually minimize the building's massing, making it more compatible with the existing campus context. The expansive clerestory windows visually connect different parts of the campus and provide staff and students with stunning views of the rural Washington County landscape.
