University of California, Merced
90,000 sf
Completed in 2005

THA Architecture were the architects for the Classroom and Office Building for the University of California in Merced. One of the first three buildings planned, the Classroom and Office Building helps set the stage for the development of the campus, calling for a design that is unique as well as cohesive with the other buildings planned for the campus.

The building is designed with a high degree of flexibility to serve the needs of the University now and in the future. The 90,000 sf building houses a 360-seat auditorium, lecture halls, classrooms, computer labs, incubator space, multi-media and studio arts spaces and faculty and graduate student offices. As well as housing traditional classrooms and lecture halls, the Classroom and Office Building serves as a distance learning center, necessitating advanced technological elements.

Sustainable Design Highlights:

Exceeds the 50% 2009 energy use reduction requirements of the 2030 Challenge (measured EUI), individual room temperature control system, high volume fly ash concrete tilt-up construction provides thermal mass, FSC certified wood, low VOC interior finishes

Certification: LEED Gold 2008
